Water Main Flushing
The semi-annual flushing of the water mains in Orleans will begin on Tuesday, April 19, 2011 and will continue for approximately 3 weeks. All flushing will be done during the day from 8:00am – 4:00pm, Monday through Friday.
The flushing schedule can be found below. In addition to road signs and daily radio station announcements on 99.9 WQRC AND OCEAN 104.7, channels 17 & 18 will also be running flushing notices during the program.
People in the immediate area of scheduled flushing should try not to use water. If water is called for during flushing, rust infiltration could be experienced; possibly harming water heaters and plumbing. Along with holding off using water, it is a good idea to shut off the water supply to ice makers during these particular hours.
If homeowners experience discolored water, they should let cold water run until the water runs clear – to help conserve, homeowners could use the extra water for their plants and gardens.
Why Do We Flush?
Flushing is done to eliminate the natural iron that precipitates out of the water and accumulates on the bottom of the water mains. With the addition of the state-of-the-art Iron & Manganese Plant, our goal is to decrease the need to flush the mains in the future.
