PRESS RELEASE- ORLEANS CULTURAL COUNCIL SEEKS APPLICATIONS

The Orleans Cultural Council has received a $4,000 grant from the Massachusetts Cultural Council to fund community oriented arts programs, humanities and interpretive science projects.

A postmark deadline of Thursday, October 15, has been set by the Orleans Cultural Council. Individuals, schools, cultural organizations and religious organizations are encouraged to  submit grant applications.  Applications from religious organizations must be primarily cultural and cannot have the effect of advancing religion.

The council has invited those who are interested in learning more about the application process to attend an informational meeting, Monday, September 21, 5:15pm, Orleans Town Hall, Namequoit Room.

According to the Massachusetts Cultural Council, annual grants are given to support a variety of cultural projects and activities which will be of benefit to the citizens of Orleans.  In addition, the Orleans Cultural Council will fund proposals from schools and youth groups through the PASS Program,  which provides subsidies for school age children to participate in cultural and historic field trips.

The Massachusetts Cultural Council defines arts as the creation of work in the crafts, performing, visual, media, folk, design, literary and inter-disciplinary arts.  This also includes the presentation and preservation of and education about works in these disciplines.  Humanities are branches of learning that deal with human values and aspirations, human thought and culture, language and creativity.  Interpretive sciences engage people of all ages in learning about nature, science and technology in ways that explain how they relate to people's lives.

Last year the Orleans Cultural Council funded grants for  performances including a Renaissance music presentation, a musical outreach program, a summer chamber music series, a pottery demonstration, a cabaret at the Orleans Senior Center and an internship program at  Cape Museum of Fine Arts.

Applicants will be responsible for obtaining a venue for their presentations before submitting their applications. The council requests 6 copies of each application, which may be handwritten.  Applications are available at Orleans Town Hall, Snow Library and the Continuing Education Office, 78 Eldredge Parkway.

Applications may also be downloaded from the Massachusetts Cultural Council website: www.massculturalcouncil.org/local cultural council.
